Question text

Which verses have been omitted from the Holy Quran according to Umar ibn Khattab?

Answer

According to Umar ibn Khattab four verses have been omitted from the Holy Quran: Rajm (Stoning) verse, Firash (Bed) verse, Righbat (Desire) verse and Jihad (Holy war) verse. It is surprising that they are available in the Sunnis’ Sahihs and Musnads while their text shows that they are not from the Holy Quran though their content is in accord with the religion, supposed verses are as follows:
1- Rajm verse:
Umar said in an oration while returning from Hajj (Pilgrimage of Ka’bah): you should be careful about the Rajm verse and not say that there are not two punishments in the Holy Quran, the Prophet (s.a.w.) throw stone at people who committed adultery and we imitated him, I swear to One who owns my life that if people did not say that Umar has added something to Allah’s book, I would write this:
الشيخ و الشيخه اذا زنيا فارجموهما البتة
“If an old man and an old woman committed adultery, surely they should be stoned”, we have recited this verse”. [1]
The words of this statement clearly show that it does not belong to the Holy Quran, the content also has some problems, because married adulterer man and woman are subject to stone, whether be young, or old, or different.
2- Firash verse:
Umar ibn Khattab said to Abi ibn Ka’b that: “Did not we recite this omitted part of the Holy Quran?
الولد للفراش و للعاهر الحجر
“Child belongs to [the owner of] bed, and adulterer must be stoned”, Abi answered: “Yes”. [2]
Although this sentence is clear, it does not belong to the Holy Quran, but the caliph thought that this sentence is from the Holy Quran.
3- Righbat verse:
Bukhari has quoted from Umar that he said: “we recited this from the Holy Quran that:
لا ترغبوا عن آبائکم فائه کفر بکم ان ترغبوا عن آبائکم
“Do not give up [the manner of] your fathers, because giving up your fathers is blasphemy”. [3]
4- Jihad verse:
Siyuti has quoted that Umar said to the son of Awf that: “Did not you find this verse in what has been revealed?
و ان جاهدوا کما جاهدتم اول مرة
“Strive, as you strive the first time”, he said that: “this is one the omitted parts of the Holy Quran”. [4]
